The government proposes stricter penalties, particularly for grave
traffic offences, and prohibits the use of cell phones while
driving. A trial driver's licence has been proposed for young
drivers.
The stricter penalties are an attempt to reduce the number of
accidents, said Interior Minister Sime Lucin.
Between 75,000 and 80,000 traffic accidents occur in Croatia every
year, resulting in about 22,000 casualties and material losses
which account for up to two percent of Gross Domestic Product.
