UNMIK police spokesman Barry Fletcher confirmed that disturbances
had broken out near Kosovska Mitrovica but did not go into any
details.
In an effort to disperse Serb protesters, international peace
forces fired tear gas and arrested one protester.
A contingent of US and French forces is located on a bridge across
the Ibar river which separates Kosovska Mitrovica from the south,
mostly inhabited by Albanians and the north, mostly dominated by
Serb nationals while the Serb protesters are currently on the
opposite side of the bridge.
Kosovo Radio reported that the reason for the protest was an UNMIK
traffic check up.
Serb sources however state that members of the international police
force and French gendarmerie arrested a 'bridge guard' at about 3
p.m. after which the local Serbs attacked the international
security forces. The same source reported that at least two Serb
citizens were injured in the disturbance in the northern section of
Kosovska Mitrovica.
