ZAGREB, April 2 (Hina) - The Croatian government regrets that laid-
off policemen who have been protesting for two weeks, demanding
that they return to work, have refused its proposal on the
establishment of a commission of inquiry to consider complaints
submitted by laid-off police officers. #L#
"Instead of that, they have issued an ultimatum to the government to
re-employ them," reads a statement the government released after
today's meeting between Prime Minister Ivica Racan and a delegation
of the laid-off police.
The government said that it continued to implement a programme of
care for unassigned police officers and suggested the
establishment of a commission to consider complaints by laid-off
officers. The government regrets that the proposal was rejected and
that "some representatives of the laid-off police do not want the
problem to be solved".
The reform of the state administration, including the Interior
Ministry, is a basic precondition for the establishment of a modern
Croatia. Cuts in the number of Interior Ministry employees, a
better qualifications structure and higher efficiency must be in
line with Croatia's potential and European standards, reads the
government statement.
