ZAGREB, March 28 (Hina) - The Presidency of the Croatian Democratic
Union (HDZ) on Thursday condemned last night's police operation
which saw the arrest of four former policemen, who belong to a group
of laid-off policemen who have been protesting outside the
government building since last Wednesday. #L#
The protesters were arrested because they violated public peace and
order by sleeping in cars in streets surrounding the square where
the government building is situated, the police said today.
The HDZ claims the police have violated the right to peaceful
assembly. "Instead of fulfilling their previous promises that they
will provide for laid-off police and their families, the current
authorities are forcibly trying to silence the dissatisfaction of
the former police and citizens who supported the protesters in
their just requests," the party said in a statement, calling on the
government to constructively contribute to lessening the citizens'
dissatisfaction with last night's operation.
