jeopardising the paper's survival. #L#
"We are deeply concerned about the court rulings, which are
unacceptable in the democratic world, against a weekly which has
won numerous international awards for journalism and is the herald
of democracy in Croatia. We believe the judgements are a
sophisticated attempt to silence critical journalists and an
attack on the independence of the press," the association says.
The association says the Split-based daily was punished for its
criticism of anti-semitic statements made by an attorney and former
State Prosecutor and describes the case as "political persecution,
an attack on pluralism and a step towards the legalisation of
censorship."
