MOSTAR, March 8 (Hina) - Quoting unnamed sources, a Bosnian weekly newspaper has reported that nine members of the Stabilisation Force (SFOR) died in last week's attempt to arrest Radovan Karadzic. The former Bosnian Serb leader,
wanted for war crimes by the Hague, is still at large. According to the latest issue of "Slobodna Bosna," one of Karadzic's bodyguards was killed in the same operation. While his guards were holding off American soldiers, Karadzic, hidden in a cave, was waiting for a good moment to run away across the Montenegrin border, says the weekly. still at large.
According to the latest issue of "Slobodna Bosna," one of
Karadzic's bodyguards was killed in the same operation.
While his guards were holding off American soldiers, Karadzic,
hidden in a cave, was waiting for a good moment to run away across
the Montenegrin border, says the weekly.
Due to an apparent security lapse Karadzic knew the SFOR was coming,
the weekly reported, and mobilised a group of volunteers from
Zvornik and Vlasenice, members of the Chetnic paramilitary
movements, who were then deployed in the woods near Calebic.
Karadzic's armed men clashed with American soldiers to enable
Karadzic to escape, the weekly said. Operatives of the Serbian
Intelligence Service also helped Karadzic's escape, according to
the article.
Citing sources close to Karadzic, the weekly says the former
Bosnian Serb leader "is under the protection of the Montenegrin
Metropolitan Amfiholij Radovic." The weekly said Karadzic is
hiding in one of the monasteries, most probably in the Ostrog
monastery near the north-western Montenegrin town of Niksic.
Karadzic planned an escape to the Serb Hilandar monastery in Greece
a long time ago, the weekly said. "If Karadzic managed to reach
Hilandar, then he is completely safe," the weekly said
