ZAGREB, March 5 (Hina) - The Media Council of the Croatian Helsinki Committee for Human Rights (HHO) on Tuesday condemned verdicts by which the Split weekly Feral Tribune must pay 200,000 kuna in damages for "sustained mental anguish"
to Marica Mestrovic, president of the sculptor foundation Ivan Mestrovic, and attorney Zeljko Olujic. The council said that such verdicts endanger media pluralism, and threaten to shift media control from the state to the judiciary. The verdicts against the Split weekly are questionable, the council said, with regard to the universal declaration of human rights, international documents, and European Human Rights Court practice. The council said the Croatian government is obliged to secure the enjoyment of freedom of expression and the media for the "domestic public in the first place, but also international partners."(hina) np sb
