ZAGREB, March 6 (Hina) - The Croatian parliament on Wednesday endorsed a bill on security services in first reading. Debating the bill, representatives of the opposition, mainly from the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), objected to
the negative assessments given the work of intelligence services at the time of the HDZ rule. The good performance of the secret services contributed to the success of the Croatian army's liberation operations during the war, they said, and added that the secret services had received international awards for their preparation of operations. According to Ljerka Mintas-Hodak of the HDZ, the reorganisation proposed by the bill is an attempt to legalise the purge of the intelligence community. The bill will not provide lasting solutions, she said. Nenad Stazic of the ruling coalition's Social Democrats said the bill is good. He welcomed the establishment of three intelligence services
ZAGREB, March 6 (Hina) - The Croatian parliament on Wednesday
endorsed a bill on security services in first reading.
Debating the bill, representatives of the opposition, mainly from
the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), objected to the negative
assessments given the work of intelligence services at the time of
the HDZ rule. The good performance of the secret services
contributed to the success of the Croatian army's liberation
operations during the war, they said, and added that the secret
services had received international awards for their preparation
of operations.
According to Ljerka Mintas-Hodak of the HDZ, the reorganisation
proposed by the bill is an attempt to legalise the purge of the
intelligence community. The bill will not provide lasting
solutions, she said.
Nenad Stazic of the ruling coalition's Social Democrats said the
bill is good. He welcomed the establishment of three intelligence
services and the closing of the Office for National Security. Its
acronym (UNS) reminds him too much of the supervision service of the
1941-5 Independent State of Croatia, he said.
