ZAGREB, Feb 28 (Hina) - Croatian Economy Minister Goranko Fizulic
has dismissed claims by opposition MPs that the proposed bill on the
privatisation of the oil company INA was drawn up under the dictate
of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
The bill was not drawn up under the dictate of the IMF or the World
Bank, nor was it discussed with their officials or drawn up to
please any other financial institution, Fizulic said at the end of a
parliamentary debate on the bill on Thursday.
The claim about the IMF's dictate and the sale of national resources
was one of the most frequently repeated claims in the extensive
debate on the privatisation of the company, which according to its
potential accounts for one third of Croatian economy.
The MPs reiterated that the privatisation process had to be
transparent and that the parliament had to have insight into all
stages of the process, as well as that INA had to protect its
identity and become a competitive company.
The social dimension must be kept in mind as well, and current and
former employees must be given a chance to participate in the
privatisation, they said.
The debate on the privatisation of INA was the last item on the
agenda of today's sitting. The 20th parliamentary session resumes
tomorrow with a discussion about a bill on the privatisation of the
power industry HEP.
