hope that Serbia will continue abiding by its pro-European orientation
after Sunday's early parliamentary elections.#L#
Declining to speculate which road Serbia will take, Mesic told the
Belgrade-based Beta news agency on Monday that he hoped the country
would have a European orientation and that it would draw lessons from
the ballot.
"Serbia must cooperate with Croatia and other countries it borders
with as this is in the interest of Serbia's economy as well as the
economies of the countries in the neighbourhood," the Croatian head of
state said.
The borders between the two countries will remain such as they are
now, regardless of the fact that in the run-up to the Serbian
elections there were some messages incompatible with European
standards, Mesic said.
"I, however, hope that Serbia will continue going on the road towards
Europe and become a desirable candidate for EU membership," he said.
Asked whether the results of the Serbian ballot would affect the
future cooperation between Belgrade and Zagreb, Mesic answered that
cooperation depended on the make-up of the future government in Serbia
and on the policy of the new Serbian parliament.
"I believe that pro-European democratic forces in Serbia will form the
new government and that we shall continue cooperating," Mesic was
quoted by the Beta agency as saying.
