LJUBLJANA, Dec 19 (Hina) - The level of tolerance towards foreigners in
Slovenia is dramatically falling and in this respect, Slovenes are the
most similar to the Swiss and Hungarians, according to the latest
monthly poll conducted by the Public Opinion Research Centre of
Ljubljana's Faculty of Political Science.#L#
Asked if immigrants should have the same rights as Slovenes, 51
percent of those interviewed answered negatively, 41 percent in the
affirmative, while the rest remained neutral, Centre head Niko Tos
said on Friday presenting the results of the latest monthly survey.
He said the drop in tolerance was cause for concern and that it was in
part due to polemics, for example about the building of the first
mosque, and the activity of right-wing parties and the Catholic
Church.
Last year Slovenia was a little below Switzerland and Hungary on a
list of 19 countries rated according to intolerance towards
foreigners.
Tos said that in Scandinavian countries between 80 and 90 percent of
the population was in favour of giving immigrants equal rights.
