WASHINGTON, Dec 18 (Hina) - Freedom House, the U.S. organisation for
democracy and human rights, has listed Croatia among free countries in
its annual report for 2003.#L#
Croatia was given the grade of two for political rights and two for
civil liberties, securing a ranking among 88 free world countries.
Croatia was given very good grades, Freedom House spokesman Michael
Goldfarb told Hina from New York on Thursday.
Croatia was graded as a partially free country since 1993 and as a
free one since 2001. This year it received the same grades as in
2002.
Freedom House today issued a report on democracy and human rights in
the world this year. The report covers 192 countries, of which 88 were
graded as free, 49 as not free, and the rest as partially free.
The Freedom House grades range between one and seven, one being the
highest and signifying that political rights and civil liberties are
closest to an ideal state. Seven means the virtual absence of
political rights and freedoms. Countries whose overall grade ranges
between one and 2.5 are considered free, those between three and five
as partially free, and those between 5.5 and seven as not free.
