"I think that in terms of Croatia's development and drawing closer to
the EU, we firmly set the path along which the new government will
proceed," Racan said, adding that this was perhaps why the new
government could not have a radically different platform than his
cabinet.
A radically different platform could only be a step backwards, he
said, voicing confidence that the achievements of his government would
be better valued in the coming period.
Racan also stressed the fact that his cabinet had been a coalition
government and that its duration of four years exceeded the coalition
average in Europe -- 1.5 years.
He recalled that it had not been easy to make the coalition government
last four years, notably owing to the state of affairs encountered
after the change of government and the tasks and ambitions his cabinet
had set itself.
Racan said the outgoing government had held 236 sessions, tackled
5,274 items, passed some 7,500 acts, and been in session 787 hours.
At the government's proposal, parliament adopted 551 laws, of which
153 to adjust Croatian legislation to European standards.
Racan thanked the members of his cabinet, ministers, their deputies
and assistance, the government's registrar and expert departments for
the cooperation.
