"The demographic policy calls for a national consensus, it is not a
party issue. That is the only way to stop trends leading to the dying
out of the population," said one of the speakers at the event,
Marijan Krizic.
Stjepan Sterc, a demographer from the Faculty of Science, insisted
on his assessment that Croatia is experiencing a demographic
disaster. Sterc said that demographic development was a strategic
goal, something that anational authorities could not understand.
Pero Aracic, a professor from Djakovo's School of Theology, said
that demographic revival could not be accomplished exclusively
through the "materialistic approach". Aracic believes that the
problem should be solved by acting in a cohesive and
multidisciplinarian manner.
The symposium, held under the title Annales Pilar 2003, was
organised by the Ivo Pilar Institute for Social Sciences on
December 11-12.
