Croatia's Foreign Minister Tonino Picula, who will attend the 11th
ministerial conference of the OSCE (Organisation for Security and
Cooperation in Europe), will address the event on Tuesday.
During the two-day meeting, to be held under the chairmanship of
Dutch Foreign Minister and the future secretary-general of NATO,
Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, the participants will discuss regional
conflicts, the struggle against terrorism, the promotion of
tolerance and religious liberties and prevention of trafficking in
human beings.
During its one-year chairmanship over the OSCE, the Netherlands
defined bids to draw up new strategies in the fight against new
threats to global security as the organisation's priority task.
De Hoop Scheffer has reiterated several times that the fight
against global terrorism is of the highest importance, but stressed
that it must not be carried out to the detriment of fundamental
democratic and human rights.
The OSCE has already accepted an action plan for curbing the
trafficking in humans, and the Maastricht event should elaborate
concrete measures in this field.
The Dutch police have reported they are expecting between three to
five thousand protesters will also arrive in Maastricht to protest
against the U.S. policy in the Near East and the violation of human
rights in wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. The rallies are organised by
the Enmasse association.
