In a statement released on Wednesday, the union said progress was
made in the past four years in relation to the period between 1996
and 1999 in all fields apart from the wage policy and freedom of the
media.
In the assessment of the position of science, the incumbent
government was marked 3 while the former Croatian Democratic Union
(HDZ) rule received grade 2. The union believes that the recently
launched science and university education reform showed progress
in relation to the preceding period. The unionists, however, say
that the progress is insufficient in relation to the needs of the
society and time.
As regards academic freedoms, the incumbent government was graded 5
on the scale of 5 while the former government received grade 4. The
union stressed a high level of the autonomy of universities, adding
that the new law was in compliance with all international
standards.
Assessing the wage policy, the union gave grade three to the
incumbent government while the HDZ government received grade 4.
Regarding union rights, the incumbent authority was graded 4 as
against the HDZ government which received grade 2. The union said
that following shorter office hours and amendments to the Labour
Act positive changes took place.
