ZAGREB, Oct 10 (Hina) - About 85 percent of Croatian elementary schools have applied for a project of teaching foreign languages from the first grade, officials of the education ministry said at a news conference in Zagreb on Monday. #L# Of the 829 primary schools in the country, 705 have applied for the project and the ministry has given the green light for the implementation of the programme in all the schools. Most of the parents (85.5 percent) have opted for English. The German language was chosen by 14.3 percent of parents. Only 0.1 percent of parents opted for Italian and French. Under the project, from the fourth grade pupils will learn a second foreign language as an optional subject. Forty-two percent of parents would like to see their children learn German as a second foreign language. German is followed by English (33.6 percent of parents), Italian (22.4 percent), French (two percent) and Spanish (0.1%). The ministry approves school curricula, while schools choose languages which will be taught to children. The final choice is a compromise between parents' wishes and the school's possibilities as regards the employment of foreign language teachers, the ministry said. (hina) ms
