The celebration was attended by Croatian Foreign Minister Tonino
Picula, representatives of the UN agencies operating in Croatia,
local officials and public figures.
Addressing those present, Minister Picula said that Croatia turned
"from a host into a provider of peacekeeping troops" to Kashmir,
Liberia, East Timor and the Horn of Africa.
He recalled that during various missions in the former Yugoslavia,
a total of 288 UN personnel had lost their lives, and added that the
United Nations had done much to reintegrate formerly occupied
Croatian areas into the country's constitutional and legal system.
He also thanked the world organisation for its contribution to
Croatia's promotion in international affairs.
The minister went on to say that Croatia, as a member of the global
anti-terrorist coalition, was in favour of the struggle against
terrorism being led by the UN rather than unilaterally.
He added that Croatia had applied for rotating membership in the UN
Security Council for the 2008-2009 period.
The heads of the UN agencies in Croatia, namely the offices of the
UNHCR, UNICEF, the World Health Organisation, the World Bank and
some other offices, presented their activities in the country, and
answered students' questions.
The United Nations celebrates its day on 24 October, when the
organisation was established 58 years ago.
