During the campaign trail, the slogan of which is "Tell Us
Everything", citizens can ask SDP officials about problems they
encounter in their everyday lives and express their remarks and
criticism regarding the work of the incumbent coalition government
in the past four years.
On Tuesday evening, citizens of Koprivnica asked SDP President and
Croatian Premier Ivica Racan and other SDP officials who are
ministers in his cabinet about the problems of public debt, the
ecological protection of the Drava river, the situation in the
Croatian military, traffic connections of Koprivnica with other
parts of Croatia, fight against white-collar crime and other sorts
of crime, economic growth, etc.
Racan said that it was necessary to carry out a reform in the state
administration so as to render it more efficient.
Asked about the Drava, he said he had recently talked with Hungarian
Premier on possibilities for the ecological protection of that
river.
As regards the state debt, Finance Minister Mato Crkvenac said that
it now accounted for 50 percent of the Gross Domestic Product and
the upper limit was up to 60 percent. He added that everything was
under control and that new loans taken abroad had been used for
covering costs of the defence and reconstruction of the country and
for the elimination of the adverse balance of payments in 2000.
"Today there is no more illiquidity, pensions are paid regularly
and Croatia has economic growth twice higher than in other
transition countries," Crkvenac said.
