ZAGREB, Sept 9 (Hina) - The government's support for the
accelerated development of the system of science and higher
education as areas of strategic importance is only declarative,
which is evidenced by a recent budgetary revision, the Zagreb
University deputy chancellor in charge of finance said on Tuesday.

Tihomir Hunjak corroborated his claim with data saying that the
Science and Technology Ministry received three percent of
budgetary funds, while its share in removing the consequences of
this year's drought was 23 percent.
The Zagreb University Senate last week held an extraordinary
session to discuss the recent budgetary revision, which has left
the ministry without 117 million kuna of budgetary funds.
Deputy chancellor Hunjak said that the budgetary revision also
affected scholarships, with Minister Gvozden Flego having
announced a 60 percent rise in scholarships.
While some student representatives urge cancellation of the
minister's decision, others have announced massive student
protests for mid-September if the minister does not withdraw his
decision. Flego said last week that he would make a final decision
on the matter after the council for finance considered it.
Hunjak claims that many deans will compensate for the reduction of
budgetary funds by increasing scholarships.
University Chancellor Jasna Helena Mencer is expected to send a
letter to the government warning about the consequences of the
budgetary revision for the system of science and higher education.
