"We should be more organised during the season," Mesic told
reporters at his office on Saturday.
Answering questions after a meeting with Polish Premier Leszek
Miller, Mesic advocated more active fire-prevention measures,
including the maintenance of safety strips preventing the
spreading of fires and the breeding of goats, which feed on
underbrush and reduce the possibility of fires.
He also said that those who criticised the government the most for
inadequate fire prevention preparations had sat in parliament at
the time when the budget was adopted.
"Why didn't they cut budgetary funds for parties to increase fire
prevention funds?," he asked.
"There are permanent critics who are trying to squeeze some
political points out of this situation, which is sad," he
concluded.
