Mesic met his Libyan counterpart, Muammar al-Qaddafi, twice during
the visit. The third meeting will take place on Wednesday morning,
prior to the departure of the Croatian delegation to Tripoli. The
meeting, however, will be held behind closed doors.
Al-Qaddafi expressed interest in the stabilisation of the region
after the break-up of Yugoslavia and Croatia's cooperation with the
successor countries. The talks also focused on the process of the
European as well as African uniting.
Mesic said al-Qaddafi was interested in seeing the realisation of
the Croatia-Libya cooperation, as well as plans and proposals put
forward by the Croatian delegation.
Croatian and Libyan businessmen have been conducting concrete
talks in Tripoli since Monday. The president of the Croatian
Chamber of Commerce, Nadan Vidosevic, is heading a 50-member
delegation from Croatia. Vidosevic told reporters Monday the two
countries' chambers of commerce signed an agreement on
cooperation.
Businessmen from Libya are interested in investing into Croatia's
tourism and waters, Vidosevic said.
Answering to reporter's question whether he saw problems coming
from the American side, which is still carefully monitoring the
contacts of all countries with Libya, Vidosevic said: "Croatia must
live from something and our best chances for stepping up exports lie
in a strong approach to countries such as Libya. We simply don't
have a choice. Besides, sanctions imposed on Libya have been lifted
and I believe there are no more obstacles for normal business
cooperation."
