PLOCE, Aug 10 (Hina) - Croatian President Stjepan Mesic has said that reaching agreement on the regime on the Danube river is vital for Croatia because of the river's great importance for Vukovar and the Danube area. #L# "The Danube is a shared river connecting a large number of countries. It integrates the economies of those countries and it is vital that we reach unambiguous agreement on the regime on the Danube," Mesic told Hina in Ploce on Saturday evening, when asked to comment on claims by some Serbian politicians that communication with Croatia regarding the border on the Danube was difficult. "Some issues have been solved successfully, but most of them are yet to be solved," Mesic said, pointing to the importance of the Danube for the economy of Vukovar and the Croatian Danube area. Mesic, who attended the 6th marathon of the Neretva river ferrymen, would not comment on a statement by Rade Cucak, an official of the Serbia-Montenegro foreign ministry, ran in yesterday's issue of Belgrade's "Blic" daily. Cucak said that talks with Croatia on the border on the Danube were more than difficult because the Croatian commission was exclusive and recognised only cadastral documents in talks on delimitation. Cucak also said that he expected a difficult battle at the negotiating table with regard to territory on the northern part of the border with Croatia. (hina) rml
