SIBENIK, Aug 11 (Hina) - The leaders of the Croatian interior ministry's Independent Police Officers Trade Union told reporters in Sibenik on Monday that the death of an officer on duty guarding the U.S. Embassy in Zagreb had been caused by inhumane working conditions, including 12-hour shifts in unbearable heat. #L# Had working conditions been better and shifts shorter, the police officer would have been alive today, Zdravko Loncar and Marinko Misura said, adding that the union had urged Interior Minister Sime Lucin to improve their working conditions, however, the ministry had not solved the problem adequately. The union leaders warned about the high level of stress in the police profession, the extreme demands it put on officers and inadequate salaries. Dissatisfied with the ministry's actions and the lack of care for police officers, the unionists announced protests in front of the government building, requesting a ten percent gross salary increase.
