ZAGREB, June 30 (Hina) - The president of the Croatian Association
of Judges (UHS), Vladimir Gredelj, has said that President Stjepan
Mesic has violated the Constitution by stating that Ante Gotovina,
a runaway indictee of the U.N. war crimes tribunal in The Hague,
would not be arrested if he came to his office. #L#
The statement which Mesic gave to Croatian Television on Statehood
Day is a blatant violation of the Constitution and a call for the
competent state authorities to disregard the constitutional order
and the tribunal's rulings, Gredelj said in a statement.
"It also constitutes a threat and an act of pressure against those
who are obliged to act in line with the Constitution and laws as
their conduct would obviously bring them in a conflict with the
President and all those who have been instructed to secure
credibility for the President's guarantee," Gredelj said.
Stating that it was high time to oppose such conduct, Gredelj
reminded MPs that it was at their initiative that the
Constitutional Court had been enabled to establish the President's
possible responsibility for violations of the Constitution.
The process against General Gotovina can be completed only by
establishing the truth before the tribunal in The Hague, Gredelj
said.
