ZAGREB, June 17 (Hina) - Florence Hartmann, spokeswoman for the

said on Tuesday afternoon the reply to Croatian President Stjepan
Mesic's letter in which he asked the chief prosecutor to consider
the possibility of amending or withdrawing the indictment against
General Ante Gotovina would be sent during the day. #L#
"The letter will be sent today," Hartmann said in a phone interview.
Asked about the content of the letter, she said it was up to
President Mesic to decide if he wanted to make it public.
Last week President Mesic sent a letter to the Chief Prosecutor of
the International Criminal Tribunal for former Yugoslavia (ICTY),
Carla Del Ponte, calling on her to consider changing or withdrawing
the indictment against the retired general.
Mesic stated that the regime which was in power in Croatia until
2000 had not made it possible for Gotovina to give a statement to
ICTY investigators.
He also stated that he had made available to the Croatian government
documents which might be used in the defence of Gotovina and, he
believed, shed new light on facts established by the prosecution in
the indictment.
Mesic informed the Tribunal that Gotovina was ready to give a
statement to ICTY investigators and make himself available to the
ICTY should the prosecution, after his statement, decide that the
indictment against him is founded.
