"Having once again carefully read General Ante Gotovina's
interview in Nacional and gained other information shedding new
light on the entire 'Gotovina case', I have decided to propose to
the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia to
re-examine the indictment against General Gotovina," read the
statement.
"Since I don't doubt the authenticity and honesty of what Nacional
printed, I have no reason not to believe Ante Gotovina... and I am
willing to guarantee to the Hague tribunal that General Gotovina
will answer every summons from the tribunal if he is given the
chance to give a statement, as a suspect, to Hague investigators in
Zagreb.
"I believe this would rectify the injustice done to General
Gotovina by the former authorities in 1998, when he was prohibited
from giving a statement to Hague investigators, which directly
pushed him into the position of a defendant," said the statement.
Mesic announced he would address his proposal in writing to the
Hague tribunal and its chief prosecutor, Carla Del Ponte.
