The Croatian Armed Forces Day began to be marked this morning with
state and military delegations laying wreaths in memory of soldiers
killed in the Homeland War.
A requiem service was held at St. Mark's church for the killed.
On 28 May 1991, members of the then National Guard Corps for the
first time lined up before the then Croatian President and Supreme
Commander, the late Franjo Tudjman in the stadium of the Zagreb
soccer club. The National Guard Corps was the predecessor of
today's armed forces.
The first troops were formed from special purposes units of the
defence ministry, and, under the president's decree, became
members of the Croatian army at the end of 1991.
