ZAGREB, May 15 (Hina) - Croatia's parliament began Thursday's
session by adopting with a majority vote a decision on the holding
of military exercises involving Croatian and U.S. armed forces in
Croatia this year. #L#
In yesterday's debate on the holding of nine exercises in the
southern Adriatic from June 15 to September 15, the benches of the
Social Liberals, the Croatian Party of Rights (HSP), and the
Istrian Democratic Assembly said the exercises could seriously
affect Croatia's tourism since they should be held in the high
season.
Deputy Defence Minister Zlatko Gareljic said the scope and
intensity of the exercises would in no way bring into question the
normal course of civilian life and the tourist season.
Today, the decision to allow the exercises was endorsed by all
benches bar the HSP, which abstained.
MPs should vote on the participation of five Croatian observers in
U.N. peace missions in India and Pakistan in the afternoon because a
decision allowing that calls for a minimum 101 votes.
Parliament president Zlatko Tomcic called on MPs to agree about the
vote so that this urgent decision could be made today.
Tomcic informed MPs parliament's committee for the Constitution
and rule book would adjust the electronic voting system to the rule
book next week so that the EUR300,000 system could become
operational next Wednesday.
The HSP said yesterday the electronic voting was not adjusted to the
rule book or parliamentary procedure, and pointed to the
possibility of abuse.
Until then, Tomcic said MPs would vote by raising their hands, but
only on urgent issues. The rest would wait for electronic voting.
