TRADES MINISTRY, CHAMBER, CARITAS AGAINST WORK SUNDAYS

ZAGREB, May 20 (Hina) - Shops should not have to work on Sundays and holidays and this should be resolved with amendments to the existing Trade Law, which leaves decisions relating to working hours up to local self-government units.
ZAGREB, May 20 (Hina) - Shops should not have to work on Sundays and holidays and this should be resolved with amendments to the existing Trade Law, which leaves decisions relating to working hours up to local self-government units. #L# This was pointed out following a joint meeting on Tuesday between the Minister of Trades, Small and Medium Enterprises, Zeljko Pecek, the president of the Croatian Chamber of Trades, Stjepan Safran, and the director of Caritas Croatia, Mario Bebic. Bebic recalled that Caritas and the Franciscan Institute for the Culture of Peace recently initiated a petition calling for work on Sundays to be banned. The petition is being signed in 80 Croatian towns and has received large public support, he said. The motive for the actions, Bebic said, is that over 40,000 people are compelled to work on Sundays and their basic rights, stemming from the Labour Act, are violated because Sunday should receive special treatment. According to Bebic, the action should be completed before the Holy Father arrives in Croatia next month. (hina) sp/ha sb
