OSIJEK, May 15 (Hina) - The Democratic Union of Croatian Hungarians
(DZMH) supports the new law on national minorities, but is not
satisfied with the fact that only four days were available for the
preparations for minority elections, DZMH's president, Sandor
Jakab, said in Osijek Thursday. #L#
The DZMH thought about boycotting the ballot, but decided to go to
elections after all.
The union admonishes the fact that electoral lists hold only the
names of candidates and not of who nominated them, and ask that this
be amended.
The Hungarian national minority in Croatia numbers 16,595 members.
Most of them, i.e. 11,000, live in the eastern county of Osijek-
Baranja, the majority of whom live in Baranja where around 30
polling stations will be opened.
Vesna Pichler, president of the Alliance of Croatian Austrians,
also voiced dissatisfaction with the elections for minority self-
governments. She said that only one electoral poll, in Zagreb, had
been foreseen for this ethnic minority. But most Austrians live in
Osijek-Baranja County. Three hundred people said they were members
of the Austrian minority during a recent census in the country.
Lists of candidates for national minority councils in Osijek-
Baranja county have been submitted by Albanians, Bosniaks,
Germans, Hungarians, Serbs and Slovaks.
Albanians, Germans, Hungarians, Roma, Serbs and Slovaks are also
running in Osijek city elections.
