At the opening ceremony, Zeljko Covic, the CEO of the Croatian
leading pharmaceutical company Pliva and the chairman of the
national council for competitiveness, said one of serious
shortcomings of the Croatian economy was its poor
competitiveness.
In this context he pointed to a report on global competitiveness for
2002/2003, compiled by the World Economic Forum and the university
of Harvard. In the report Croatia is the 52nd-ranked among 80
countries in the world.
In June a comprehensive report on the situation in this segment in
Croatia will be completed, and then the said national council,
which is a special guest in the two forums, will take a more active
role in solving problems.
The three-day forums, organised by the Infoforum company, have
gathered participants from Slovenia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbia
and Macedonia, besides Croatia. The emphasis will be put on small
and medium-sized businesses.
Mayor of the City of London, Gavyn Arthur, who is heading a
delegation of British institutionalised investors at the two
events, welcomed the participants in the forums and said Croatia
was playing a significant role in the region, particularly in the
economic field.
