CROATIAN ACADEMY OF ARTS AND SCIENCES GIVES ANNUAL AWARDS

ZAGREB, April 29 (Hina)- Eight annual awards for the highest scientific and artistic achievements were bestowed by the Croatian Academy of Arts and Sciences (HAZU) on the prominent scientists and artists Tuesday.
ZAGREB, April 29 (Hina)- Eight annual awards for the highest scientific and artistic achievements were bestowed by the Croatian Academy of Arts and Sciences (HAZU) on the prominent scientists and artists Tuesday. #L# The award for Natural Sciences and Mathematics went to the head of the Organic Chemistry and Bio-Chemistry department of the Rudjer Boskovic Institute, Dr. Mladen Zinic, and to Dr. Zlatan Bajraktarovic, a regular professor of palaeontology at the Natural Sciences and Mathematics Faculty in Zagreb. The award for medical science was given to a regular professor of the Medical Faculty in Rijeka, Dr. Stipe Jonjic, while the award for philosophical science went to a scientific adviser at the Old Slavic Institute in Zagreb, Dr. Milan Mihaljevic. The award in literature went to a poet Andriana Skunca. The art award went to academic sculptor Ivan Lesiak while the award for music went to Dr. Mirjana Babic Siriscevic from Split. Dr. Vedran Zanic from the Engineering and Shipbuilding Faculty was presented with the award for technical science. HAZU president Ivo Padovan held a speech to mark the 142nd anniversary of the Academy stating that the Academy had always attracted the greatest minds in Croatia and great scientific and cultural personalities from other nations. The most deserving for the founding of the Academy was Djakovo- Srijem Bishop Josip Juraj Strossmayer, who became the Academy's sponsor while its first president was a historian, Dr. Franjo Racki.
