ZAGREB, April 14 (Hina) - Zagreb County's state prosecutor
Krunoslav Canjuga confirmed to Hina on Monday he resigned to his
post after chief state prosecutor Mladen Bajic told him earlier in
the day that he would be suspended on Tuesday. #L#
"I tendered my resignation when... Bajic told me he no longer
trusted me and announced that he would suspend me tomorrow," said
Canjuga.
He said he told Bajic the suspension would be unnecessary because he
did not wish to hold an office on which he was not trusted. Canjuga,
therefore, tendered a written resignation.
Canjuga said Bajic did not tell him why he no longer trusted him or
the reasons for the suspension. He also said that tomorrow's press
articles about said reasons were "media speculation".
According to Jutarnji list daily's unofficial sources, the
wiretapping of a Zagreb attorney recorded a telephone conversation
involving Canjuga which mentioned the doctoring of files on people
suspected of large-scale trafficking and the division of bribes.
"As the county state prosecutor in Zagreb I did not alleviate any
case, I only demanded more strictness," Canjuga is quoted in
Jutarnji list as saying.
Representatives of the interior ministry, the state prosecution
and the Office for the Prevention of Corruption and Organised Crime
today announced uncovering and preventing abuse of office and
corruption in the public sector would be a priority for police and
the state prosecution in the coming period. Bajic said there were
grounds to suspect corruption in the public sector.
