ZAGREB, April 22 (Hina) - Trade unions will again this year mark
Labour Day on May 1 at Zagreb's Maksimir park. Whether the event
will be a celebration or a protest will depend on the result of
negotiations about changes to the Labour Act, unionists said. #L#
Union federations will decide after Friday's meeting with Prime
Minister Ivica Racan whether to organise the celebration of Labour
Day on May 1, or stage a protest rally similar to last year's, when
unionists presented a "yellow card" to the government due to
announced amendments to the Labour Act.
Union representatives, who strongly oppose reductions of severance
pays and of dismissal notice periods, have recently reached an
agreement with Racan that severance pays for employees with up to 20
years of service would not be reduced, while those with more years
of service would be compensated for the loss of some of their
rights.
Government and union experts should this week complete drafts of
and calculations for compensation measures, after which the prime
minister will on Friday hold separate talks with representatives of
unions and employers, the leader of the Independent Croatian
Unions, Kresimir Sever, told Hina on Tuesday.
