The Vojvodina assembly last May decided that Croatian was the
official language throughout this northern Serbian province. This
decision, alongside the national minority status, granted the
local Croat community, is seen as the most important development in
the community's life there.
The possibility of officially using Croatian, and using it in
official communication with state bodies, is in keeping with the
Serbia and Montenegro law on the protection of national minorities'
rights and freedoms and an agreement on the normalisation of
relations signed between Croatia and the former Federal Republic of
Yugoslavia.
