The head of state supported all positive initiatives for improving
the situation on the field, economic development and social
circumstances in war-struck areas, Mesic's advisor for internal
affairs, Igor Dekanic, informed reporters after the meeting.
SNV president Milorad Pupovac said that a mutual wish had been
expressed during the talks for the current situation of separation
between the Croat and Serb communities in eastern Slavonia and
areas of return be overcome.
The president of the Independent Democratic Serb Party (SDSS),
Vojislav Stanimirovic, said the party applauded Mesic's invitation
to Croatian citizens to return to their pre-war homes.
According to Stanimirovic, a vehement electoral campaign began on
the local level and political points are being scored on problems of
Serbs, so incidents on the national bases are being initiated in
Vukovar, for example.
The president of the Joint Council of Municipalities, Jovan
Ajdukovic, said they had come to President Mesic because of their
social and economic insecurity and a feeling that the Serb minority
in the Croatian Danube River region was not treated equally.
They voiced their concern over increasingly frequent arrests and
war crimes charges from 1991, which, said Ajdukovic, was leading to
legal insecurity among ethnic Serbs.
