ZAGREB, April 10 (Hina) - Most party benches in the Croatian
parliament on Thursday refused a proposal by the Istrian Democratic
Assembly (IDS) that parliament discontinue a debate on the
privatisation of the Suncani Hvar hotel company because MPs lacked
relevant arguments. #L#
The IDS believes that "a debate which is conducted without
arguments does no good either to tourism or economy" and supports "a
comprehensive and separate parliament debate on privatisation and
tourism".
The IDS's proposal was supported only by the Democratic Centre
bench which said that a moratorium should be imposed on the
privatisation of the tourist portfolio until the new parliamentary
composition was elected and the law on privatisation changed.
The Social Liberals believe the debate should be resumed
exactly because of lack of complete information on the Suncani Hvar
case and demand that the parliament adopt conclusions on the
disputable case at the end of the debate.
The Croatian Peasant Party supported the continuation of the debate
as well. Party whip Luka Trconic objected to yesterday's statement
by Tourism Minister Pave Zupan Ruskovic who said that the
government had changed its decision on the sale of Suncani Hvar due
to speculations on faulty privatisation processes. Commenting on
the statement, Trconic said that a three-member government
commission, made up of ministers, established that there had been
irregularities in the sale process.
The Croatian Democratic Union bench supported the adoption of
conclusions on the case and urged the Interior Ministry, State
Audit Office and State Prosecution to submit a report on the case to
the parliament as soon as possible.
The Social Democrats supported the continuation of the debate, but
also endorsed the IDS's proposal on a comprehensive privatisation
debate.
The Croatian Party of Rights believes debates of this type should
result in a consensus on the course of privatisation in tourism and
changes to the privatisation law.
The Liberal Party bench suggested that parliament also open a
debate on the privatisation of agribusinesses.
Parliament resumed today's sitting with individual addresses by
MPs on the privatisation of Suncani Hvar.
