Amongst the trials announced are those against the attempted murder
of the head of the Serbian Revival Movement (SPO), Vuk Draskovic
(the case known as an attack on Ibar Highway in October 1999 which
left four party members dead). Other trials will deal with the
murder of a journalist, Slavko Curuvija, assassinated in April
1999, as well as the abduction and slaying of former Serbian
president Ivan Stambolic.
According to Mihajlovic, further investigations should show the
credibility of statements of the perpetrators themselves, and
corroborate statements about a secret meeting held following the
NATO air strikes at which, as the Minister said, the criminal family
decided to liquidate reputable public figures and to use
individuals from Special Operation Forces and the criminal milieu
for that purpose.
Speaking at an extraordinary meeting of the party of Serb Liberals
whose leader he is, Mihajlovic said that so far in an investigation
into the assassination of Premier Djindjic, interviews with 8,212
persons had been held, and 2,114 of the interrogated persons were
detained. As a result, criminal charges have been pressed against
834 people in all.
According to Mihajlovic, each of the 105 crime gangs, registered in
early 2001, "has been raided" and anyone with criminal records has
been brought in and questioned by the police.
