ZAGREB, April 9 (Hina) - The U.N. war crimes tribunal for former
Yugoslavia's (ICTY) warrant for the arrest and extradition of
retired Croatian General Janko Bobetko was automatically suspended
after the Croatian government informed the ICTY that he had been
served with the indictment, ICTY spokesman Jim Landale told Hina
from The Hague on Wednesday. #L#
Landale explained that the March 19 decision passed by ICTY judge
Carmel Agius, ordering the serving of the indictment on Bobetko or
his attorneys, meant the immediate suspension of the arrest and
extradition warrant after the serving.
The government informed the tribunal about the indictment being
served, said Landale, and added that this automatically suspended
the warrant.
A new decision is not necessary, Landale told Hina.
He said that withdrawing the warrant did not change the status of
the indictment against Bobetko. The indictment is still in force,
he said.
The war-time Croatian Armed Forces Chief-of-Staff, Brigadier
General Janko Bobetko has been indicted based on individual and
command responsibility for war crimes during the Medak Pocket
military operation in 1993.
