JUSTICE MINISTER: CROATIA WILL REQUEST MIKELIC'S HAND-OVER

ZAGREB, April 5 (Hina) - Croatian Justice Minister Ingrid Anticevic Marinovic has stated Croatia will request the hand-over of a former premier of the self-styled Croatian Serb republic of Srpska Krajina, Borislav Mikelic, who the media reported was arrested in Serbia. #L# "Croatia wants him to be handed over. Now that we know that he has been arrested, we know his whereabouts and a request for his hand- over is to follow," Anticevic Marinovic said after a session of a high body of the Social Democratic Party. The minister expected the response of the Serbian side to be positive and that Mikelic would be handed over. Quoting police sources, the Serbian media last night reported that Mikelic was arrested in Belgrade as one of the key figures linking the "Zemun Mob Clan" and some circles in the Bosnian Serb entity which were involved in organising or helped carry out the assassination of Serbian Premier Zoran Djindjic. In June 1993 Croatian courts sentenced Mikelic in absence to 20 years in prison for war crimes against civilians. He was charged with having organised and co-ordinated armed rebellion against the Croatian authorities and issuing orders to Chetnik units to carry out armed attacks on Petrinja and other towns. Before the outbreak of the war in Croatia, Mikelic was the manager of Petrinja's "Gavrilovic" meat plant, and after the break-down of the Croatian Serb para-state in 1995 he fled to Belgrade. According to the Serbian media, he there worked for a company whose manager was one of the closest associates of former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic. (hina) rml
