ZAGREB, March 26 (Hina) - Member of parliament Ivica Tafra of the
Croatian Bloc (HB) was on Wednesday promised to receive a written
reply to his question whether Prime Minister Ivica Racan knew of at
least one case of a country processing its generals who had defended
it. #L#
Retired General Mirko Norac was sentenced to 12 years in prison,
retired General Ante Gotovina is on the run and the Hague-based U.N.
war crimes tribunal is again requesting that retired General Janko
Bobetko be handed his indictment, Tafra said and asked if Croats
could be a proud people if those most responsible for their freedom
were tried.
Since Racan was absent during that part of question time, Tafra was
promised a written reply.
Branimir Glavas of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) warned the
government that intelligence services had been functioning outside
of the system for the past two years because the government had
failed to pass a rule book and regulations on their work.
Vice-Premier Goran Granic admitted that the government had not done
this yet for objective reasons. He said the government and
intelligence chiefs would pass the documents soon.
An MP of the Social Liberals (HSLS), Ivan Cehok, accused Defence
Minister Zeljka Antunovic that by dismissing 13 of 20 heads of
defence offices she was purging the armed forces and violating the
rule book by replacing the office head in Varazdin with a person who
was not qualified for this job.
The minister dismissed the allegations, saying that she had not
dismissed or appointed any defence office head, nor had the
authority to do so. She added that everybody who believed that their
rights had been harmed could submit a complaint.
The fact of the matter is that office heads, as other employees,
have been made available due to the reorganisation of the defence
ministry, but their qualifications and performance are being taken
into account in the process, which is why a new job schedule has been
suggested, Antunovic said.
