ZAGREB, March 26 (Hina) - The role of the United Nations must be

during a debate on the government's report about the Iraqi crisis.

The government's actions were responsible and principled, said
party benches of the ruling coalition. A part of the opposition
parties believe the government's policy is inconsistent and
incomplete, at times even "autistic".
The government has wavered from supporting the Vilnius Group to
President Mesic's harsh stances about the war in Iraq, said Milan
Kovac of the Croatian Bloc (HB), adding that this "tragic play"
testified about "the irresponsible staggering" of the
authorities.
The government's moves were not contradictory, Jozo Rados of the
Libra party believes,
The Istrian Democratic Assembly (IDS) voiced satisfaction with the
turn the government had taken after the U.N. had not granted the
military action in Iraq. The Social Liberals (HSLS) said that in
principle it supported the government's stances after such a U.N.
decision.
"We, however, cannot forget the wandering," said HSLS's Drazen
Budisa, complaining about the fact that there had been no effort to
reach a national consensus on Iraq, so the government had one
stance, while the strongest opposition party a different one.
This opposition party, the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), today
maintained its full support to the American policy towards Iraq.
The HDZ has taken a stand, it has nothing to add and it remains
faithful to it, said HDZ's Vladimir Seks.
The party benches agreed that due to the war in Iraq, the U.N. was in
a deep crisis, the EU divided and NATO paralysed. They agreed that
The United Nations must become affirmed and persist in being
effective.
If the war in Iraq, which is legally doubtful, is not an incentive to
organise the U.N. more efficiently, then this organisation will end
up as the League of Peoples, which failed, Democratic Centre's Mate
Granic said.
U.N.'s affirmation is the only solution for the future of the world
and especially important for small countries, said Luka Trconic of
the Croatian Peasant Party (HSS).
Party benches support the fight against terrorism, they do not
doubt that Saddam Hussein is a dictator, but they ask whether there
will be less terrorism in the world after the Iraq war. IDS's Damir
Kajin said there would be more terrorism.
Some party bench representatives again dismissed a warning by U.S.
Ambassador Lawrence Rossin that Croatia would bear consequences
because of its stance towards the military action in Iraq,
stressing that Croatia had already suffered economically, since
its early tourist season had already been ruined.
The parliament adopted a request by the Croatian Party of Rights
(HSP) and committed the government to submit a report on the
country's international position at the next sitting.
Prime Minister Ivica Racan agreed with this request.
