ZAGREB, March 12 (Hina) - Croatian President Stjepan Mesic on Wednesday sent a letter to the President of Serbia and Montenegro, Svetozar Marovic, harshly condemning the assassination of Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic, Mesic's Office said in a statement. #L# Serbian premier Djindjic died in hospital shortly before 14.00 hours after he was shot by at least two bullets in the chest in an apparent assassination in front of the government building. "I harshly condemn the terrorist act which today ended the life of Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic. I hope that this mindless act will not have permanent negative consequences for Serbia's stability, namely the stability of the state community of Serbia and Montenegro, as well as for the situation in a wider region," Mesic said in the letter. "Serbia had difficult moments during the Milosevic dictatorship and we expected its path towards a modern, democratic Europe to be faster. This assassination slows down the Serbian path to democracy," Mesic told reporters shortly before the public was informed that Djindjic died in a Belgrade hospital. (hina) it sb
