Wednesday's assassination on Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic. #L#
The government will declare a state of emergency, unofficial
sources close to the government told Hina.
Djindjic died in hospital in the early afternoon hours today after
he was shot twice in the chest with high-calibre sniper bullets.
Previous information was about two bullets in the stomach and one in
the back.
The media report that two assailants were arrested, but the Serbian
interior ministry has provided no confirmation of this, not
information about whether tow two people arrested are in fact the
assassins.
Strong security forces sealed off the area around the government
building, where Djindjic was shot, immediately after the incident.
Three ambulance vehicles have been stationed in front of the
building.
Traffic around the centre of Belgrade has been blocked off and
police are searching vehicles and passengers.
There was an attempt to assassinate Djindjic on February 21 in
Belgrade when a truck cut in front of a motorcade carrying Djindjic
to the airport. The truck with Austrian registration plates was
driven by Dejan Milenkovic, a known criminal.
Radio B92 has reported that most police have left the area around
the hospital in which Djindjic died, while his wife, Ruzica, left
the hospital a little before 2pm, accompanied by Yugoslav interior
minister Zoran Zivkovic.
All flights from Belgrade airport have been cancelled
indefinitely, Belgrade's electronic media reported.
