Djindjic recently proposed that Kosovo be divided among Albanians
and Serbs according to the U.N. model for Cyprus and become a
federation of two entities with asymmetric ties to the rest of
Serbia.
UNMIK information director Simon Haselock said the UNMIK strongly
opposed Kosovo's division. Haselock said that U.N. Civil
Administrator Michael Steiner was against Kosovo's division,
cantonisation and secession.
Ahead of the start of ministerial talks between Kosovo and Serbia,
scheduled for next week, Kosovo Premier Bajram Rexhepi said last
night Djindjic's ambitions with regard to dividing Kosovo could
become a reality only if Albanians failed to cooperate with
international factors and Serbs were not given the opportunity to
integrate in the Kosovo society.
