LJUBLJANA, March 6 (Hina) - The Slovene foreign ministry on
Thursday issued a press release stating that border issues with
Croatia had been solved at the government level, adding that
Slovenia expected the realisation of concluded agreements. #L#
"Regarding some statements and quotes in the media about possible
solutions for border issues between Croatia and Slovenia,
including the sea border, we wish to recall that the two countries'
governments have already reached agreement on said issues and
confirmed their agreement. We, thus, expect that what has been
agreed on and confirmed by the two governments will be realised,"
notes the press release the ministry also made public on its
Internet site.
The Slovene press agency STA, which carried the release, explains
that the statement refers to claims by some Slovene media about
Croatian President Stjepan Mesic's statement in Split, according
to which Croatia wanted to close off Slovenia's access to the
Adriatic Sea by proclaiming an economic belt on the Adriatic, in
agreement with Italy.
The Slovene media reported Mesic said that Slovenia would thus gain
passage to the open sea, while Croatia would preserve its border
with Italy, which was its strategic goal.
In their first reports, the Slovene media voiced a negative opinion
about Mesic's proposal.
Maribor's daily "Vecer" claims that with the proposal for
proclaiming an economic belt to Slovenia's detriment, Mesic had
joined "the rightists from the Croatian Party of Rights (HSP)" who
have been the only ones to propose such a solution so far.
