THE HAGUE, Feb 27 (Hina) - American judge Theodor Meron was on Thursday elected new president of the U.N. war crimes tribunal in The Hague (ICTY) and Italian Fausto Pocar as his deputy, said the tribunal's secretariat.

At today's extraordinary plenary session, permanent ICTY judges
elected with a voice vote Meron and Pocar to succeed judges Claude
Jorda and Mohamed Shahabudden, who previously became judges of the
International Criminal Court (ICC).
Meron will take up office on March 11, while his deputy will assume
duties immediately, said the secretariat.
