MRKOPALJ, Feb 21 (Hina) - An event commemorating the march of Croatian partisans from Lika to Gorski Kotar, during which 26 soldiers froze to death at Matic Poljana on February 19, 1944, was held in Mrkopalj under the auspices of
President Stjepan Mesic, who attended the event.

The event, which has been held for 41 years, includes a cross-
country skiing competition.
Opening the event, Mesic said that partisans, just like Homeland
War volunteers, had laid "the foundations of the Croatian state",
fighting against fascism. He noted that Croatia was again faced
with the "demons of fascism, which we believed were part of the
past".
