"In addition to the great role played by non-profit organisations
in the protection of human rights, the environment, humanitarian
activities etc., they also have great possibilities to incite
economic growth and mobilise a large number of volunteers who are
working for the common good," Deputy Prime Minister Ante Simonic
said opening the event.
According to the latest information, there are 22,740 associations
registered in Croatia. During 2002, the government financed non-
profit organisations' projects with 17 million kuna (2.23 million
euros) from the state budget. About the same will be earmarked again
this year, Simonic said.
During the Zagreb Fair event, activists from the civil sector will
present their programmes concerning youth, invalids, social
security, environmental protection, culture, human rights,
democratisation of society.
